Organized in 1911, the Tigard Community Methodist Church services were held on Sunday afternoon in a vacant room in the old Tigard school building. Soon after that it was moved to an upstairs room in the old Schamoni Store building over the pool hall. Ironically the congregation moved again within a few weeks because the singing during the church services disturbed the pool players.
The initial building plot as purchased and an additional plot donated to be large enough to construct a three-room church and Sunday school rooms. Later when the State Highway Commission decided to construct the Tigard overpass, the church and parsonage were moved across the road onto the site of the present U.S. Bank now sits.
Growth continued and in 1961 the site on Walnut Place was purchased and construction began with completion in August 1963 with worship services beginning at that time. Upgrading continued in 1998 the addition of the gym and remodeling of the sanctuary completed in 2001.
Tigard United Methodist Church continues to offer support and housing of Tigard Cooperative Playschool, Tongan UMC congregation, Apostolic Assembly in the Faith of Jesus Christ (Spanish), Encore Women's Ensemble, Tigard Recreation Assoc., Weight Watchers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Browenies, and a variety of denominational recreation leagues.
